We have entered an era in which we are being called to step forward in a new way, to digest and integrate all that we have learned, and let it go so that something greater can be born in and through us.
In this era, we find our core stability in ourselves and each other and not in the toxic systems that have sustained us.
Our bodies are speaking to us, but our attention is elsewhere. When our hearts hear before our brains respond, systems stagnate, structures collapse, and people get sick.
Taking back our attention through our bodies and our breath, and showing up imperfect but curious, with a gigantic heart and a nimble brain, is the new way through.
I hope this collection of essays inspires you to get curious, get moving and get free!
Finding Trust in a Broken World
Waking up to even-more-terrible news today, that yes, he did it, and the way he did it and that now he unleashed dark forces like we cannot fathom, I am shaken. I am feeling unglued. Last night's raid was also a direct hit to our most powerful ally, trust. Nothing breeds fear like a rupture of trust and like slave-owners, autocrats and serial killers have known forever, fear equals control.
Are You Stuck Or Are You A Superconductor?
Is this a photo of a couple making the best of it or slowly being swallowed by sargasso (that enormous bloom of smelly, toxic seaweed currently threatening gorgeous beaches you’d probably like to visit)? You could say, “Well, isn’t it interesting the way that problems birth solutions?” Or “When do our adaptations perpetuate our mutually assured destruction and when will we decide to clean up the water we swim in?” Every crisis presents an opportunity. The metacrises we’re swimming in is an opportunity for something new and spontaneous to emerge.
Don't Resist, Regenerate
As things get progressively worse in Amerika, it becomes clearer and clearer to me that, if we are going to be able to save our sanity, democracy and our planet, we must practice coherence. According to Phys.org, quantum coherence is the phase relationships between waves in a quantum system, crucial for maintaining superposition and entanglement.
We Are The Technology and The Terrain
A dear friend quoted 'we are the technology' in a conversation we were having last week. She attributed it to Dr. William Bushnell, a mentor and collaborator of hers, who is an MIT-affiliated biophysical anthropologist.
It speaks to me of the power of our senses to shrink or expand our perception. It also speaks of the power of our agency and the tragic consequences of unresolved trauma.
Fascia and the Time-Free Body
“Never let a good crisis go to waste”. Sir Winston Churchill
The chaos and ruptures in our lives have left us with an opportunity. We can use catastrophe to revision and restructure culture. We've had time to rethink many things, including what it means to be human in a culture sliding towards decay. Yet, if we look to the past, and integrate it with what we now know, we may well find the future we desire is already here.
Even Shitty, Dissipative Structures Birth New Life
Mothers and dissipative structures – what do they have in common? We're familiar with it as a gift of Nature, like rotting trees mothering mushrooms but, what about toxic structures and how do they relate to me and my development?
Defying Gravity
I received some wonderful news last week. I am now clinically cancer-free! I'm not out of the woods yet and still have more ahead but, my surgeon even called me a poster child for healing. I am celebrating the win as an answer to my prayers and a confirmation of my healing protocol which includes maintaining a healthy fluid flow of life force energy through my fascial matrix.
We are the architects of our future
Easter is falling in the Northeast this year when the hyacinths, magnolias, and cherry trees are bursting in full glory. The air is crisp and the sun is warm.
Resurrection is in the air, too. This is not hope speaking. It is faith, deep, embodied faith.
I will describe it for you because maybe you also feel it, or something different? It would be good to talk about it and expand our awareness.
The Quiet Revolution
In a culture conditioned to devalue intuition, empathy, and complexity, it should be no surprise that we ignore the most fundamental aspect of our humanness – our interconnectedness with Creation. Goddess forbid that we slow down and rediscover this for ourselves. It is the most revolutionary act we could commit!
Coherent Selves Create Coherent Cultures
After the resounding turnout for Hands-Off, I am convinced that change is happening. Although it's beyond me to predict how, that is not the point and that is what I want to dig into.
The point is, you can't predict or plan for what spontaneously emerges. Emergence cannot be pre-planned. It is the spontaneous arising of something completely new. It bubbles up from below, untouched by embedded memories and our mental bodies' compulsion to put their imprinted thumbs on the scale of what is possible.
The Freedom of Our Plasma Consciousness
As our systems collapse around us, waves of energy are released. This chaos is really a huge opportunity to show up and create something beautiful.
Take your body, for instance:
Your fascia is much more than a physical system, it is a Living Liquid Crystal Matrix and a gateway into your past and possible futures. Imprinted with every emotional, familial, and ancestral experience. It is the fourth state of matter. It is conscious bioplasma and it has the power to transform your spiritual life and conscious evolution.
The Unity of Chaos and Coherence
Everything that happens in our lives impacts the body and shapes us. We express it through the web of our fascia. This web holds the stress, pain, and trauma of countless many who have walked before us, but when we understand how to be with ourselves and it, through breath, movement and intention, the web transforms from sticky to fluid, and morphs from chaos into coherence, there is nothing like it!
Position Influences Function
Position influences function. I heard our national treasure, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, say this the other day. She was referring to the body but, this is true on so many levels!
Understanding the depth and breadth of this truth is to understand ourselves beyond the confines of the positions we hold in or about life.
Your body posture shapes you as much as you shape it.
Learning to Let Nature Do the Work
If there is one thing my dance with cancer is teaching me, it is that I get to choose. I choose to release all the adjusting, fixing, and pleasing and see myself as a complex system nested within many other overlapping systems. The choices I make from coherence move me into a new future.
If I ask myself what does the Garden of My Body need, right now, to personally thrive and bring my best into this fractured world? I begin seeing what emerges as fresh, coherent, and new but, it is only one half of the coin.
How to Grow a New Story
What irony that the Big Brutal Bill was signed into law on July 4th, bookending the birth and death of the national order we thought we could count on! We are in the midst of a change unlike anything we've experienced before, and yet I am optimistic. This is all going to work out in favor of life. However, even if I had had plans for the 4th, I would not have felt much like celebrating.
It begs the question: What do we do when things fall apart? Do we push through, patch it up and try to get back to what used to work? Do we pull ourselves into a frozen shell and do nothing? Or do we allow what needs to die in us die so that we may partake in the full cycle of Nature coming alive again in us?
My Sunday with Dragonflies
There is a shift happening in the way we look at trauma and nervous system dysregulation. It is a shift away from the idea that the problem rests with an individual who needs fixing and toward an understanding that the patterns of fight/flight/freeze/fawn are reasonable coping mechanisms designed to keep us safe. The old way of dissecting and excavating the object (you) from the environment emerged within old paradigms of Western psychology. We're now recognizing their origin in a mentally-biased, white, patriarchal, ableist culture of control that centers heteronormative compliance as 'healthy'.
